2020 WASSCE: Expect New International Examination Timetable Soon – WAEC

LAGOS -The Nigerian office of the West African Ex­aminations Council (WAEC) on Sunday reassured all registered can­didates, schools and other stakeholders that new inter­national timetable for the con­duct of the examination in the West African sub-region will be released once the COVID-19 scourge relaxes in the region.

It would be recalled that WAEC, Nigeria, had on March 20, 2020, announced the post­ponement of the examination in appreciation of the current realities of the danger posed by the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus globally and Nigeria.

The Council’s Head of Na­tional Office Nigeria, Mr. Pat­rick Areghan, stated this in a statement as he debunked a sto­ry going viral on social media to the effect that the Council had cancelled the conduct of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WAS­SCE) 2020 as the fallout to the globally ravaging COVID 19.

According to the HNO, due consultations with relevant stakeholders had been ongo­ing, saying that a new date would be announced as soon as the situation improved.

He said the examination was supposed to start in Nigeria on April 6, 2020, and not April 15, 2020, as stated by the authors of the fake news.

“WAEC, as an examining body in the sub-region, has not announced the cancellation of the examination; it only an­nounced a postponement until normalcy is restored.

“The publication is patently false and deceitful. It is noth­ing but the handiwork of mis­chief makers who are out to defraud innocent and unsus­pecting candidates and their parents/guardians,” Areghan said.
